Often we look for people who are a lot like us. These people have the same interests as we do, are part of the same activities, and even live in the same place. While this is both comfortable and easy, it will never challenge nor expose us to what is new. What's curious is, when you are so similar to another person you will want to compete in what you have in common constantly. Whether you are both excellent soccer players, love science, or are amazing singers, comparison is inevitable.
I do not disagree that it can be very comforting to be able to share your interests with another person and be able to discuss what you most love to do, however, that is not what life is all about. Life is meant to take you out of your comfort zone and introduce you to as many differences as possible.
Think of your existence as you would a puzzle: you always fit better with a different piece. This is why you should interface with as many people as possible in order to learn as much as possible. A community is at its best when nobody is exactly the same. It should be filled with differences in culture, languages, aspirations, and solutions. The only way to finish a puzzle is to put every different piece together to create an image united as a whole.
Therefore, the next time you think “I wish I could meet someone like me,” stop and instead start to explore the diversity that our world has to offer, and look for someone unlike yourself instead.
This is awesome, very insightful.
