If you were anything like me as a kid then you loved to play with Legos and make any kind of structure with them based on your favourite movies, activities, or dream house. If anyone were to ask me how many pieces of Lego I've used in my life, I wouldn't be able to give you an answer. There are way too many!
However, what I didn't know, until now, is that Lego is an extremely large emitter of carbons and actually has a very large carbon footprint. In fact, even the company itself admits that "the LEGO Group's own operations and supply chain were 1.1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents." Not only is the production process polluting the environment, but the materials used inside Lego blocks are actually harmful as well.
There is good news! Now Lego has started a new initiative to use sustainable resources and new materials that are more friendly to the environment. So, what can you do with the Legos you have lying around the house? Bring them back to the store to be recycled! Lego will take all your bricks, clean them, and recycle them to make new sets for children. My favourite childhood toy can call itself sustainable very soon.
