Forty thousand cubic meters of terrain fell over the Passo Monte Croce Carnico causing the
pass to shut down on Friday, until the area can be secured. Geologists say that there are
currently open fractures in the soil which continue to cause alarm. “The possibility of tens of
thousands of cubic meters of earth becoming dislodged from the mountain is a growing
concern for the territory,” said Andrea Mocchiutti, a geologist in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Securing the area will take many months, reviving talks on plans for a tunnel as a solution to
connect Austria to this region. This is the worst landslide the region has ever documented.
With the increase in frequency of severe weather, barrier construction has become
inadequate, instigating talks in favor of the new tunnel. Governor Peter Kaiser is considering
the proposal.
