Oysters: Natural Environmental Engineers

Why have oysters come to be so important? Believe it or not, we can save our reefs and harbors one oyster at a time. Most people only think of oysters as a tasty dish, however, there is much more to them than meets the eye. Oysters actually help clean our waters and prevent erosion. In fact, according to NICCOS (National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science),

“A single adult oyster can filter more than 50 gallons of water a day.”

This is one example of nature taking care of itself, but we have to allow it its own natural process.

This is why it is important to volunteer for organizations like the “Billion Oyster Project” which are helping clean shells for oysters to stay in. Once these oysters have a home, they are able to purify water and keep our New York City reefs healthy. Although now this may seem like a small change, it can be the first step in our progress towards a greener future.
