I want to be an engineer. But what do I need to do to get there? The conventional answer would be advanced mathematics and physics courses. While it is true that you need a strong foundation of both subjects, there's more.
An engineer needs to be not just a problem solver but excellent at finding problems. If you’re the logical thinker in an argument telling others that something cannot be done, because of concrete evidence, chances are you are a natural engineer. Think about it, in order to solve a problem you have to be really good at identifying it with insight, observation and perception...not just intelligence.
I don’t think engineering is as mechanical as everyone makes it out to be, though. You do need some level of creativity in order to come up with innovative ideas and solutions. The balance between logic and creativity is the sweet spot, and that is engineering.
